A.O. "Al" Ballew

Chief Ballew began his career in Law Enforcement, 32 years ago with the San Antonio Police Department, where he held various positions in Patrol as an Officer, Directed Patrol Officer, Field Training Officer and serving as a member of the San Antonio Police Department Honor Guard Rifle Team. He served in the Traffic Division working expressway enforcement, specialty programs, D.W.I. enforcement and accident investigation. He served in Special Operations, both in the Gang Unit and the Street Crime Arrest Teams. During his tenure in Special Operations, he served on the Violent Crime Task Force and provided Executive and Dignitary protection. He served as a Firearms, Rifle and Tactics Instructor at the Training Academy. He also served as Public Information Officer to the Chief, conducting in excess of 2000 interviews with local, state, national and international news agencies and was an active member of the San Antonio Emergency Operations Center during critical events. Chief Ballew is a recipient of the San Antonio Police Department Meritorious Conduct Medal and has received awards for Good Conduct, Certificates of Merit, Certificate of Centurion Merit, Community Service and Officer of the Month. Appointed by the Chief of Police, he was Co-Author of the San Antonio Police Department General Manual. After a distinguished career, he honorably retired from the San Antonio Police Department in 2006 to accept a position with the San Antonio Park Police Department, where he commanded the Covert Operations Unit, CORE Unit and Environmental Crimes. He also served as Park Police Liaison with outside agencies regarding mass events such as the Annual San Antonio MLK March and the City of San Antonio New Year’s Eve Celebration, Fourth of July Celebration and San Antonio Spurs Championship celebrations. He honorably retired from the San Antonio Park Police Department in 2011, serving the City of San Antonio with over 28 years of service. Chief Ballew was appointed Chief of Police for the City of Windcrest in February of 2012. Chief Ballew earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Criminal Justice with a Minor in Sociology from Texas State University. He is a graduate of the Law Enforcement Management Institute of Texas (LEMIT) at Sam Houston State University and a graduate of the F.B.I. Command College. He is a TCoLE (Texas Commission on Law Enforcement) Master Peace Officer, Police Firearms Instructor, Glock Armorer, Field Training Supervisor, Training Instructor, Covert and Surveillance Operations Instructor, IPMBA (International Police Mountain Biking Association) Bike Certified Officer and Police ATV Officer. Chief Ballew received US Congressional recognition in August 2015, honoring 32 years as a Texas Master Peace Officer. Chief Ballew is a member of the International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP), the Texas Police Chief’s Association and serves as the 2015 Chairman of the Alamo Area Police Chief’s Association.
